Melissa Devine, Flat Cove Wind Phone

Melissa Devine was the driving force behind the installation of the Flat Cove Wind Phone. Wind Phones are an installation featuring a disconnected phone where community members can take a moment to speak to their lost loved ones and help them process their grief. This Wind Phone features a QR code for HopeHealth, a local hospice care.

After losing both of her parents, Devine learned about wind phones by reading “The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World.” The book highlights the first Wind Phone, which was created in response to the 2011 Tōhoku tsunami in Japan. She wanted to bring that same comfort to our community in North Kingstown. This Wind Phone joins an international network of over 600 wind phones registered at My Wind Phone.

The Wind Phone box was built by Jim O’Neil and uses recycled materials from the Ivar Mudslinger Troll in Wilson Park, North Kingston, a sculpture made by Tomas Dambo. You can find the Flat Cove Wind Phone off of the Quonset Bike Path near a small pine grove.
